Understanding Percentage Calculations

Percentages are a fundamental mathematical concept used to express parts of a whole, where the whole is represented as 100. The word percentage comes from the Latin "per centum" meaning "by the hundred."

There are several common types of percentage calculations:

  • Basic Percentage: To find a percentage of a number, multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100.
  • Reverse Percentage: To find what percentage one number is of another, divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100.
  • Percentage Change: To find the percentage change, subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100.

Percentages are widely used in various fields including:

  • Finance (interest rates, discounts)
  • Statistics (population growth, market share)
  • Science (concentration solutions, efficiency)
  • Education (test scores, grade calculations)
