Fraction Calculator
Perform calculations with fractions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Our calculator automatically simplifies the results to their lowest terms.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the numerator and denominator for the first fraction
- Select the operation you want to perform (+, -, ×, ÷)
- Enter the numerator and denominator for the second fraction
- Click Calculate to see the result
- The result will be automatically simplified to its lowest terms
Understanding Fractions
A fraction represents a part of a whole. It consists of two numbers: the numerator (top number) and the denominator (bottom number). The denominator represents the total number of equal parts in the whole, while the numerator shows how many of those parts are being considered.
Basic Fraction Operations
- Addition (+): To add fractions, we need a common denominator. The calculator handles this automatically by multiplying the denominators.
- Subtraction (-): Similar to addition, we need a common denominator. The process is the same as addition but we subtract the numerators instead.
- Multiplication (×): Multiply the numerators together and denominators together. This is the simplest operation with fractions.
- Division (÷): To divide fractions, multiply by the reciprocal (flip the second fraction upside down and multiply).
Simplifying Fractions
After performing calculations, fractions should be simplified to their lowest terms. This is done by finding the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, then dividing both by this number. Our calculator automatically simplifies all results.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Never divide by zero (denominator cannot be zero)
- When adding or subtracting, don't add/subtract the denominators
- When multiplying, don't multiply crosswise
- When dividing, don't forget to flip the second fraction
